From Racecourse to Riverwalk: Applying Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) to Facilitate Site Remediation and Redevelopment

    Metiri Group Representative

    Ashley Lesser, Moderator

Northville Downs hosted its last horse race in 2024, and the historic site is slated for a $300 million mixed-use redevelopment including new housing and over 13 acres of new parks. As part of the project, a quarter-mile segment of the River Rouge will be "daylighted," connecting downtown Northville with the popular Hines Drive trails. The river had been routed into a concrete culvert and buried in the 1960s, and the fill material used to bury the culvert was contaminated with metals, volatiles, and semivolatiles.

The presentation will highlight how incremental sampling methodology (ISM) was used to prioritize areas along the Rouge River for remediation and to characterize soil for potential on-site reuse. The talk will feature regulatory agency, Brownfield redevelopment, consultant, and laboratory perspectives on the application and benefits of ISM. Learn how ISM maximized the effective use of grant funds for this ambitious green infrastructure project.
