    Staff Scientist-Data Acquisition Specialist (DAS)

    Job Specific Skills/Duties:
    • Maintain rigorously detailed documentation of field activities
    • Communicate/present conclusions and results in clear written and oral reports
    • Collect environmental data (groundwater, soil, surface water, sediments, and soil vapor)
    • Complete soil core logging and monitoring well installation oversight
    • Oversee subcontractors
    • Operate, maintain, and monitor various mitigation systems
    • Earth-moving tasks via shovels or hand augers
    • Lift pumps, remediation equipment, equipment cases, sample coolers and other items
    • Assist Data and Mapping Specialists with map/figure development
    • Review data deliverables, maintain project data, and support other uses of the data
    • Collect GPS and survey elevation data in the field
    • Interpret basic chemical, geological, and hydrological information
    • Assist in data preparation for use in documents, work plans, and reports under direction of senior staff
    • Effectively use Windows-based computers and word processing and spreadsheet software
    Education and/or Experience:
    BS degree in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, or related degree

    • Strenuous fieldwork under a variety of site and weather conditions.
    • Able to work overtime and travel
    • Potential exposure to natural (e.g., poison ivy) and chemical hazards; and
    • Heat and cold are oftentimes an issue.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; in outside weather conditions and can expect to encounter toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Employee must be able to make frequent trips to local sites and travel via air and land on temporary assignments. Land travel may require the use of company or personal vehicles. Therefore, a valid driver's license in good standing is required.

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year accredited college or university in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or Geology or comparable discipline.

    Training / Certification
    • 40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred.
    • Asbestos Building Inspector license preferred.

    Technical Experience

    • 1 - 3 years of experience with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs).
    • Understanding of Phase II ESAs, vapor intrusion studies and UST removals/closures.

    Key Job Elements

    In this role you will:

    • Independently perform Phase I ESAs for commercial and industrial properties.
    • Perform Phase II ESA field activities and summarize laboratory data.
    • Assist in hazardous materials survey entailing sampling for asbestos-containing and lead-based paint materials.
    • Assist with the preparation of technical proposals and reports.
    Perform other field and office tasks as necessary.


    Other Requirements

    • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and have ability to interact with clients to understand their needs.
    • xceptional time management and organizational skills, and ability to work on multiple projects for multiple project managers within budgets and deadlines.

    Work Environment / Physical Demands

    • Must hold a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at job sites as well as NTH offices in Michigan.
    • May be required to perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary.
    • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

    • Reviewing site plans for conformance to wetland, woodland, and natural features ordinances
    • Preparing environmental permit applications
