Due Care: What Would You Do?

Please join us on May 23rd for a scenario-based discussion of Due Care. Jeanne Schlaufman will provide the DEQ perspective. The panel will walk through Due Care obligations for property owners, given various types of property and contamination.

Jeanne Schlaufman has been with the MDEQ-RRD for over 20 years, and she has been the RRD’s statewide specialist for BEAs and Due Care since 2002. Jeanne is a member of the Vapor Intrusion Technical and Program Support (VI TAPS) team, and is currently a member of the Part 201 Criteria Update Team. Jeanne has a BS and BA degree from the University of Michigan and a Certificate in Hazardous Material Management from Wayne State University.

Gary R. Klepper, GHD Services, Senior Environmental Scientist & Office Manager 
Gary provides expert analysis and strategic advice relative to Michigan environmental regulations, drawn from technical experience with the U. S. Geological Survey and Michigan Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality, and over twenty years administering MDEQ regulations as both a central staff and district supervisor. He has assisted clients with responsible environmental stewardship for over fifteen years, and continues to contribute to the development of Michigan environmental regulations through MMA, State Chamber, MCC, and the MDEQ CSI, providing particular leadership in evaluating groundwater contaminant impacts on surface water resources.

James M. Harless, PhD, CHMM, Vice President / Principal of SME
Dr. James Harless, CHMM is a Vice President, Principal for SME and has been an environmental consultant for over 41 years, 27 of which have been in Michigan. During his career, Dr. Harless has been involved in EPA-funded sampling and analysis research and methods development, investigation and cleanup of sites ranging from gas stations to RCRA and Superfund sites, regulatory compliance auditing and program development, and litigation support. Over the past 20 years he has specialized in brownfield redevelopment, combining expertise in brownfield financing, environmental due diligence, site investigation, exposure mitigation, and due care compliance to help communities and developers successfully complete over $1.5 billion in redevelopment projects. His projects have won eight U.S. EPA Phoenix Awards and four national Brownfield Renewal Awards. Dr. Harless is an MAEP Environmental Professional of the Year and a Fellow of the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.
